This, in my opinion, is a wonderful rescue organization! They take in every kind of animal.

Humble Hearts Haven-Pa

A woman named "Susan" started this rescue after being associated with another rescue that shut down. She takes in only one or two hard luck cases at a time. She is located in Pa. I have been unable to find a website for her, perhaps she doesn't have one. I have heard nothing but good things about this woman and her facility.

What this blog is about

I created this blog because there are so many scams out there involving horse rescues. People have a hard time trying to determine which ones are real or just people selling horses and using the term "Rescue" to make a buck. Don't be fooled just because someone claims to be a 501c3 charitable organization. The IRS seems to hand those out without any guidelines or rules.

The rescues listed here have a good reputation and have not been involved with any known scams.Not all rescues will be 501c3's. In my opinion, there are a lot of private rescues out there doing a wonderful job also.

About This Blog

Rescues I will NOT feature are the following:

1. Any rescue that claims to be "National" and has numerous "Branches" in several states. Face it, there is no possible way that rescue can keep tabs on who is doing what and what horse goes where. Most "National" rescues have a list a mile long of horses adopted out that are missing.

2. PMU Rescues. Oh yeah, let's pay 1200.00 for a wild, unhandled DRAFT horse, in another country even, PLUS the cost of shipping. Why buy Canadian when you can adopt American?

3. Nurse Mare Foal Rescues. If you can show me one that doesn't use shady practices to "Market" the foals. By shady I mean this:

a. There are no "Pony Skin" Foals. No foals in the USA are used to make fashion statements. Any company in America that uses any type of horsehide, imports the horsehide from other countries. And they use the hide from full grown horses, not foals.

b. By Law, a foal has to be at least 6 months old before it can be shipped to slaughter. So no, Nurse Mare Foals aren't sent to slaughter to be dinner overseas.

Or one that isn't taking in foals from another rescue, I'll feature it here. (Face it, if you are getting foals from another rescue, you are taking in foals that have already been rescued. What's the point?

4. Any rescue that breeds anything or promotes breeding.

5. Any rescue that "Brokers" horses from a third party.

And last but not least,

6. Any rescue that is Pro-Slaughter

Before You Donate

Before you donate to ANY organization, you should always do the following:

1. Visit the facility. Look for these things:

a. Do they have adequate pasture space for how many horses they have?

b. Do the horses have hay, water, shelter available?

c. If you see a skinny horse, before you jump to conclusions, find out when that horse came into the facility. It may have just been taken in.

2. Talk to the facility's Vet. Any reputable organization will gladly give you their vet's name and number. The vet can tell you if the organization has kept up with shots, treatments, etc.

3. If an organization is asking for specific donations,, ie, going towards feed bills or vet bills, find out if you can donate straight to the Vet or feed store. A lot of organizations have it set up so you can do that.

4. Ask questions. If they are a 501c3, ask to see their letter from the IRS granting them tax exemption. You can also look up their organization on the IRS's website - search for charitable orgs
